About Me

I specialize in web application development, but my professional range includes both IT and Business. I have experience with websites and web applications in front-end and back-end environments. I can collaborate on a project with a team or work independently from start to finish. I am self-motivated and enjoy learning new technologies.

My love affair with development began in January 2012 when I took my first programming class. It wasn't long before I began branching out with my own development projects. One of those projects was called Black Bird Magazine, an art and literature magazine. I launched a website for Black Bird Magazine and directed the launch of the associated social media network. I have since developed a number of websites and social media pages for Black Bird Magazine.

When I'm not coding, I write poetry and short fiction. In 2016, I started working on a compilation of literary fiction called Dead Dog. I completed the book in March 2019. It includes 15 short stories and a few poems. Since then, I have also written a collection of short fantasy stories and a collection of poetry.

I'm a retired citizen soldier.

Black Bird Magazine

In 2012, I co-founded Black Bird Magazine with Paige Rothfus. We founded the magazine with the intent to publish the work of local artists in the Des Moines area. The magazine transformed from print to web over a period of three years. In that time, I built three versions of the magazine's website. The final version was developed as a social media site.

From 2012 to 2015, I managed Black Bird Magazine and led a team of 15-20 writers, designers, and marketers from around the world. During that time, I found ways to overcome the challenges facing such a diverse team. Each day I dealt with difficulties in communication, task breakdowns and assignment, planning, and supervision.

While managing Black Bird Magazine, I regularly drew upon my web development, design, and marketing skills to maintain and develop the Black Bird social media website and database. I managed multiple email contacts, several traditional social media sites, and networked for Black Bird Magazine in person.

National Guard

I joined the Iowa Army National Guard shortly after graduating from Nevada High School in Nevada, IA. I shipped to basic training in early 2004 and attended advanced training in the fall. I received my certification as an Avionics Systems Repairer in November, graduating with the highest percentage in my class.

For years, I worked as a member of the aviation unit in Boone, IA, honing my skills as an avionics technician. Then I deployed with the unit in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2008. I received an Army Commendation Medal for my service in Iraq. After deployment, I continued to work for and train with the unit for the next seven years.

In June 2017, in order to receive a promotion, I transferred to another unit in central Iowa, where I joined a team in defense and support of civil authorities during emergencies.

In March 2019, I retired from the Iowa National Guard.
